Florida's Early Childhood Immunization Initiative

Archived -- January 2008

Complete the Coverage - 90 by '07Vaccines have dramatically reduced the number of children affected by infectious diseases and their complications. However, the viruses and bacteria causing vaccine-preventable diseases and death still exist. Complete immunization of Florida's children prevents epidemics of these diseases.

Recognizing the importance of early childhood immunizations, the Bureau of Immunization sponsors an initiative to increase the immunization coverage of two-year-old children. This initiative integrates the efforts of public health departments and private sector physicians to raise immunization rates of all children. The initiatives goals are to protect children from vaccine-preventable diseases, promote awareness of early childhood immunizations, and develop broad-based support for early childhood immunizations. Additionally, plans to improve and expand data collection systems for childhood immunizations are underway.

The Initiative Continues

4:3:1:3:3:1 Coverage
  • 4 DTaP - Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis
  • 3 Polio
  • 1 MMR - Measles, Mumps, Rubella
  • 3 Hib - Haemophilus influenzae type b
  • 3 Hep B - Hepatitis b
  • 1 Varicella - Chickenpox

The next step toward surpassing Healthy People 2010 goals is to assure our children are protected against vaccine-preventable diseases.

What is the next challenge? That Florida achieves complete vaccine coverage for the 4:3:1:3:3:1 series for 90% of all 2 year-olds by June 2007. CDC/NIS measures this goal and provides results in July 2007.

"This is a big challenge and I know we can do it," Florida Department of Health (DOH) Bureau of Immunization Chief Charles H. Alexander, said.
